WHAT IS IT?
The Sports Mentorship Program is a program offered through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region aimed at providing mentoring to children and youth who have expressed major interest in a sport that they currently participate in or have the sincere desire to participate in. The program would match a volunteer(s) with a child who shares a sport interest in order to mentor the child by teaching life skills, goal setting, character, and good sportsmanship. The pair would then get together on a bi-weekly basis focused around the sport - playing, transporting, practicing or watching, for a minimum of one year. Since most sports do not run all year round, and let’s face it children’s interests can change, the match will be focused on the primary sport but may include participating in or watching other sports, especially during the off-season.
The goal of the program is to target our waitlist which is predominantly made up of boys, so this program has been designed to engage primarily men of all ages and backgrounds. The program offers a less intensive time commitment than our Traditional Big Brother Big Sister program, to appeal to men who are interested in volunteering but unable to make a weekly commitment. It is also designed to fit into this particular demographics lifestyle. However, this program is also open for female volunteers, couples or possibly even families.
