In-School Teen Mentoring

Program Description

A friendship-based, non-academic program that matches high school students with boys and girls (grades 1 - 7, 6 - 12 years old), for one hour a week, at the child's school. This program is run in partnership with the Kamloops School District #73.

Who are our Teen Mentors?

You are! A typical volunteer is a caring responsible teen who comes from a variety of religious or cultural backgrounds and from all walks of life. There are no special skills required - only a willingness to spend some time with a young person. You will give a child the opportunity to benefit from a one-to-one relationship while expanding the child's information about the world beyond their own family and neighborhood.

What is the commitment of a Teen Mentor?

You are asked to spend an hour per week with your Mentee and commit for one academic year (September - June). The volunteer and child spend their time together in ways that are of interest to both of them (for example, playing board games, cards, physical activity, visiting the school library, talking, drawing, making things, etc.)

What are the children's backgrounds?

The one thing they have in common is that they have been identified as children that could benefit from having some extra attention from a caring, responsible youth.

Our program is friendship based and is not designed as a form of intervention for serious individual or family problems. The children should not be experiencing any severe emotional or behavioral difficulties.

Big Brothers Big Sisters support

We provide on-going support and monitoring. Each Teen Mentor has a Mentoring Coordinator who is available to deal with any questions or concerns that come up. Regular phone contact is an expectation of the program as are regularly scheduled meetings to discuss the progress of the match. Also, at each school there is a liaison person whom you can access for additional support.

Who are the Littles?

Children in our programs range in age from kindergarten through Grade 7.  Each child is unique, responsive, and has a need for a consistent, positive role model.  As we are a volunteer service, our program is friendship based and is not designed as a form of intervention for serious individual or family problems.
