The objectives of the Aboriginal In School Mentoring Program align well with traditional teachings. Presently all of the Big Buddies who have volunteered for the program have mentored someone else, whether it be a family or community member, officially or unofficially. The benefits of the program are twofold, a detail not overlooked by the many First Nations/Metis volunteers. All report experiencing a great deal of satisfaction from their relationships with their Little Buddies. Sharing time with a young person is an invaluable opportunity to lean something about ourselves in the process. Much of the success of this newly developed program is attributable to the commitment of those volunteers whom recognize the importance of this simple exchange. If you are Aboriginal and proud to be so, consider sharing time with a young person in your community, it makes a difference.
Who are the Littles?
Children in our programs range in age from Kindergarten through grade 7. Each child is unique, responsive, and has a need for a consistent, positive role model. As we are a volunteer service, our program is friendship based and is not designed as a form of intervention for serious individual or family problems.
