George Ramsay Mentor Scholarship
Established to assist Big Brothers and Big Sisters, In-School Mentors or Teen Mentors pursue post-secondary education at Thompson Rivers University. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region have established this scholarship in honor of George Ramsay, who was a Big Brother in the 1970’s.
One scholarship of $1000.00 will be presented on an annual basis to an individual who meets the following criteria:
- Is or has been a volunteer mentor for a minimum of one year; or is a Teen Mentor in grade 12 that has served a minimum of one school year.
- Has been accepted by, and is proceeding to, Thompson Rivers University prior to Dec. 31st in the year the scholarship is awarded.
- Has filled out the George Ramsay Scholarship application.
- Included a minimum 300 word summary describing your experience as a mentor.
- Submits a letter of reference from an individual who has observed or been affected by your mentoring involvement (i.e., school counsellor, teacher, principal, parent of your "Little:" or your "Little".
Applications must be received by May 14th, 2010 – A decision will be made by June 15st, 2010. The successful applicant will have been accepted by, and is proceeding to, Thompson Rivers University prior to December 31st in the year the scholarship is awarded. The scholarship will be paid directly to Thompson Rivers University. Winners may apply in successive years. Proof of registration is required before payment will be made to the institution on behalf of the successful applicant.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region In Memoriam Scholarship:
As of June 2008, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region has established this scholarship in honor of:
- Ev Jones, who was a past Big Sister and an active Board Member in the organization for approximately 20 years.
- Gordon Inskip who was a past Big Brother and active Board Member in the organization for approximately 25years.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region has established this scholarship to assist one current or former Little, who is or was, involved in any of the Big Brothers Big Sisters programs, pursue post-secondary education at Thompson Rivers University.
One scholarship of $1000 will be presented on an annual basis to an individual who meets the following criteria:
- Is, or has been, a "Little" or wait-listed as a "Little" (in any of our programs, Traditional, In-School, or In-School Teen) for a minimum of one year
- Has been accepted by, and is proceeding, to Thompson Rivers University prior to Dec. 31st in the year the scholarship is awarded.
- Has filled out the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops & Region In Memoriam Scholarship application
- Submits a minimum 300 word summary describing why you deserve this scholarship.
Applications must be received by May 14th, 2010 – A decision will be made by June 15st, 2010. The scholarship will be paid directly to Thompson Rivers University. Winners may apply in successive years. Proof of registration is required before payment will be made to the institution on behalf of the successful applicant.
The Brant Zwicker Scholarship:
The Brant Zwicker Scholarship has been established to assist one or more current or former Little Brothers or Sisters pursue a post-secondary education in the fields of journalism, photography and/or broadcasting. Brant Zwicker has served the organization for many years both as a Big Brother as well as on the Board of Directors and was an instrumental part of the “Building for Children’s Futures” House Committee.
One scholarship of $500.00 will be presented on an annual basis to an individual who meets the following criteria:
1. Is or has been wait-listed as a Little Brother or Little Sister with the Kamloops organization for a minimum of one year.
2. Has been accepted and is proceeding to any recognized (accredited) college,
technical or university in Canada prior to Dec. 31st in the year the scholarship is
awarded. The applicant must be enrolled in courses leading to a degree or certificate in
journalism, photography or broadcasting.
3. Submit a fully completed The Brant Zwicker Scholarship application
More than one scholarship may be awarded in any given year but the total value of the scholarship(s) awarded in one calendar year will not exceed $500.00. Applications must be received by May 15th, 2010 – a decision will be made by June 1st, 2010. Only one scholarship application per family unit will be accepted annually and the scholarship will be paid directly to the institution. Winners may apply in successive years.
Additional notes
1. The scholarship will be paid directly to the institution and must be refunded to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops in the event the winner withdraws from the university prior to Dec. 31st of the year the scholarship is awarded.
4. The scholarship(s) will be awarded on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee and will be awarded for a one year term. Winners may apply for successive year.
