In-School Mentoring Program Receives $55,000 from Boston Pizza

MERRITT, BC (August 15, 2014) Boston Pizza Future Prospects will donate $55,000 over the next 3 years to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kamloops and Region to support the growth of their  In-School Mentoring  program  in  Merritt.  The  program  matches  referred  children  at designated  schools  with screened  and  trained  mentors, and  focuses  on  activities that  support  positive relationships, active recreation, social development and success in school.

Through this donation, Boston Pizza demonstrates the value of investing in the children of our community,” said Ian Gerbrandt, Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Together we will grow the In-School Mentoring program to help more children stay in school and reach their full potential.”

After starting 4 years ago, a local mentoring program involving Merritt Secondary and Merritt Central Elementary School has provided supports and opportunities to 124 children and teens.

In 2014 we are celebrating 5 years of service to children in Merritt through this program and know that our teenage volunteers visiting Central school each week are truly making a difference.” said Gerbrandt. We  are  now  looking  to  expand  our  mentoring  programs  by  engaging adult  volunteers  and  local employers who want to make a difference for kids.

Future Prospects is Boston Pizzas signature cause for its charitable efforts across Canada, with money raised through activities such as the sale of their heart-shaped pizzas in February. The focus is to raise money and awareness for mentoring programs that help Canadian youth.

"Boston Pizza believes that strong role models inspire kids to be great," said Gary Dixon, owner of the Boston Pizza in Merritt. "With Future Prospects, franchisees from coast-to-coast can engage their employees and customers to address the growing need to provide kids with access to mentors that inspire them to thrive and succeed. We are so pleased a significant part of these funds is being invested in Merritt.”
